3 Secrets to a PAIN FREE body!

By Tim Drown and Annie Poirier
Did you know what most women do to alleviate pain (rest, take medicine, ice, heat or do specific exercises prescribed by a doctor or physical therapist at the specific joint where the pain is felt) doesn’t workit does not solve the root of the problem it only treats the symptoms for a short while.

What Does Work:

Secret #1: Improve your FASCIA Health by Foam Rolling
Fascia is a tough cobweb-like sheath that envelops the muscles, nerves and bones. It protects organs and joints from head to toe and acts as a shock absorber.
The fascia becomes tight, knotted and constricted from trauma, injuries, accidents, the same repetitive motions, poor posture, neuromuscular weakness and the aging process.
When the fascia constricts, shrinks or gets tight it gets inflamed and creates pressure on the tissue surrounding it causing an increase in pain and inhibits mobility and flexibility. The fascia is also rich in nerve cells, so you will feel the pain.

Secret #2 – Ensure that the joints along your Kinetic Chain Function Correctly/Optimally.
Did you realize the nagging pain in your knee might be caused by tight muscles in your hips? Ifyou only do movements to strengthen muscles around the knee you won’t resolve the kneepain. You might be wondering why this is – our entire body is related (connect by something called a kinetic chain) and compensates for imbalances, pain or injury in order to protect itself. Simply put, every body part is linked and dependent on every other body part through a system called the kinetic chain.
The kinetic chain is the system that promotes and manages movement -from the feet tofingertips and the muscles, fascia (that’s that word again), and other connective tissue tie it all together. If one area of the chain is weak, another part must compensate and the next link in the chain will suffer.
For the chain to functional optimally it must have both stabile and mobile components with one part of the chain stabile and then the next mobile all the way up to the shoulders/neck.
If one component along the chain is broken, deficient or not working properly your body will compensate and you will FEEL PAIN/ACHES.

Secret #3 – While every joint is important along the chain the HIPS maybe most important Implement a Movement Prep and Prehab Routine.
Todd Durkin, a fitness pro who trains professional athletes as well as every day Joes and Janessays, “If your hips are tight and don’t or can’t function correctly (properly), you are on the road to pain, injury and even disability.”
The key to improving HIP rotation function is to improve both Hip mobility and stability. I will go into more detail later on when I talk about HRD (Hip Rotational Deficit)
So, the 3 Secrets to Pain-Free Living is: to Improve your Fascia Health, Make Sure Your Joints Along the Kinetic Chain are Functioning Correctly and Make Time to Improve Hip Mobility Function.
Now that you know the 3 secrets to Pain-Free living let take a look at the top 6 causes that women suffer from chronic daily plain. (From Todd Durkin)
  1. Elevated, too much Stress
  2. Too much Sitting
  3. HRD (Hip Rotational Deficit) /Poor Hip & Pelvis Functioning
  4. Poorly Designed Exercise Programs
  5. Not enough focus on doing Movement Prep or Prehab
  6. Poor or inadequate Recovery & Regeneration Strategies
Having too much stress (distress) leads to fat storage and body changes, bio markers are impacted negatively, leading to shallow breathing and hinders quality sleep.
Simply put distress leads to dis-ease. When you live in excessive distress, you feel anxiety, worry, anger, frustration, irritability and have high levels of cortisol (the fat storage hormone). Stress impacts sleep quality, causes blood pressure to spike and breathing becomes shallow, causing muscles from your neck down through your back to tense up and tighten It then wreaks havoc on your entire body.
Solution: Listen to Yoga Nidra Guided Meditations, learn how to improve your breathing drink more water and tea get out into nature, move-play-exercise joyfully

Too much Sitting which causes our glutes to bear the brunt of the weight and our chest muscles to tighten and pull the shoulders forward. We wind up hunched forward putting pressure on the back and neckWe all sit too much (in front of computers, in meetings, at lunch, on the coach at night watching tv, etc....) Sitting for hours develops poor posture which alters the body’sfascia and causes perpetual pain.
Solution: Play, Move & Exercise Joyfully. Implement our 2x2x2 Movement Formula (Do 2 days of walking, 2 days of PlayFit, and 2 days FitMoves. Foam Roll do Movement Prep and Prehab Activities on a consistent basis.

Hip Rotational Deficit (HRD) Having limited ability at the hip complex (glutes, piriformis, psoas, and adductor muscles) impacts how the pelvis functions (it flexes and rotates the trunk and stabilizes the back). It locks the hip down and prevents the proper amount of rotation needed to move effectively.
All these muscles are connected by fascia. The renowned movement expert Moshe Feldenkraissaid, “You go as your pelvis goes” When your pelvis is off level, out of balance, tilted forward orback it causes muscles to function poorly and the body moves inefficiently. This compensatory causes multiple joints along the chain be impacted, leading to pain.
Solution: Use Movement Prep, Prehab and Foam Rolling to improve mobility and flexibility of the muscles that surround the pelvis and hips in order to keep the body pain-free performing well and feeling great.

Poorly Designed Exercise Programs found on the internet or old outdated training methods and exercises lead to joint injuries, muscle strains and chronic tendonitis and over-training. In addition, most traditional programs use machines that isolate muscles and are linear based (that is they train the body in one plane) Lifting, cycling, running and rowing are straight linedactivities and don’t reflect how the body functions and works in the real world. Lastly, certainmovements or exercises might be exacerbating the pain.
Solution: Train the core in all directions, do movement prep and prehab activities that increase flexibility in the hip and midthoracic (mid back) while strengthening low-back stability. Use training equipment like bands, dumbbells, medicine balls and kettlebells while doing more pulling exercises to overcome sitting. Since our body moves in multiple planes and dimensions, exercises and movements should also challenge you in this manner.

Not Focusing on Movement Prep or Prehab. Most women have serious flexibility and mobility issues especially in the hips, hamstring and chest. And the older we get the worse it becomes. Failure to focus on this important part of a workout/ training leads to muscle tightness, discomfort, knotted and constricted fascia, injury and pain.
Solution: Foam Roll, Implement a 5-7-minute Movement Prep routine prior to your workout, play, movement or exercise session. Do 3-5 prehab activities either at the start or end of a workout. Do some static stretching especially for the calves, hamstrings, glutes and piriformis and chest muscles.

Poor Recovery and Regeneration Strategies that lead to over-training and burn out. Not using the best practice standards with regards to nutrition and sleep. Not listening to Yoga Nidra (Stress-Less with Divine Sleep) Not using ProVantage a world class recovery beverage from Reliv to speed recovery and enhance fascia health.
Solution: Rest, Recover & Re-energize. Learn more about nutrition and change your habits with regards to food and eating. This is the #1 thing you can do, as food fuels our body and is key to our body systems functioning properly and optimally

Super Bon Bon

I was taking a walk this morning, Day 9 of my "What's in a Walk" 90 day introspective.  My mind drifted back to Tuesday mornings walk with my friend Bonnie.  It was 2 degrees out, so we decided on the indoor track.

I remember first seeing her at the fitness center riding the stationary bike or rowing on the rower in the back of the gym.  She was always smiling, sharing stories and laughing with those around her.  She lit up the dark corner of the room, like rays of sunshine as they pierce through the clouds.

A few years ago, she asked me if I would train her.  "Absolutely!" I said, with a smile, "I would love to".  I couldn't wait to find out more about her, find out where those rays of sunshine were coming from, find out more about that inner joy that she seemed to have...that positive energy and vibration that followed her around like an adorable puppy.

Bonnie is an extrovert, kind to everyone, tells hilarious stories, gets herself caught up in crazy predicaments, and ALWAYS pops out the other side with a smile on her face.  She once told me a co-worker called her Super Bon Bon.  I have been calling her that ever since.  It is the most appropriate nick name.

It doesn't seem to matter what hard things that might be going on behind the scenes (no pun intended...since she is quite the actress) with her life or with her body...of which has not cooperated very well over the past couple of years...You would never know anything was wrong.  She can make you feel good just by standing in her presence.

She works hard at keeping her body fit and working for her.  You know when she is concentrating and pushing hard because her tongue will stick out a bit. I love her determination not to let any physical injuries or limitations get her down.  She just deals with it, and moves on.

Our friendship has blossomed over the training time we have spent together.  We contemplate life, friends, work, family, kids...we share advice, we celebrate successes and sweep our failures up under the rug...

We have not spent much time together lately, our lives moving in different directions(the way lives do) so Tuesday was the first time we were together for a while.  The time flew by, the conversation flowed easily.  It is nice just to "BE" with someone...with no expectation...

Bonnie, I am so grateful you crossed my path, and decided to walk along with me for a while.  Your joy, energy, strength, kindness and love of life has rubbed off on me. Thank you for that...

Rock on Super Bon Bon...cant wait to see what life has for you next...

Wanted: Aerobics Instructor

A few years back...(a few too many to say) Group Exercise Instructors of today were called Aerobics Instructors.  The days of Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons.  Yes, I am that old...

"What type of classes can you teach?" I ask
"I can teach anything" she says...
"Oh...OK, here is the stereo..."

She came in to demo for an aerobics instructor position at the gym I was working at as the "Aerobics Director".  Little did I know, this day would have a tremendous impact on me...

Full of confidence,  a sense of street smarts, and a powerful presence, Michelle walked in.  I was instantly struck by her positive sense of self.  It vibrated off of her.

Up until that day, I had never met anyone who was so sure of herself.  I was a bit taken back...apprehensive...nervous...unsure

Even with my apprehension, there was no denying that her "Demo" (interview) for the position was great.  I hired her on the spot, knowing that she would be a great addition to our team and excited that she would add more strength to our schedule. She was passionate, dedicated and driven.  All qualities I respected and admired.

Michelle taught me over the years that we worked together about tact, about being Ok with standing up for yourself, being OK to admit when your wrong, and being OK to stick by a decision you believe to be right.  To realize that 2 people can think differently and both be "right" and on the same page.

We grew to have mutual respect and genuine like and friendship for each other. I love the way our relationship evolved...like no other I have had...

I am thankful that Michelle came into the gym that day...having moved into NH from MA..(thank you Massachusetts!) Thankful for the lessons and wisdom...

I now watch the amazing paths her boys have taken following their own passions...just like mom...with 100% of her support.

I send YOU MICHELLE, lots of love, admiration and respect.  Thank you for being you and coming into my life.  Because of you, I am stronger...

Digging In

Are you kidding me?  She is going to weigh us in front of the whole team?  Shit...My heart races, my palms start to sweat, I feel lightheaded.  I think I am going to be sick...This can't be happening.  I should have worked out more over the summer, I shouldn't have eaten so much...why did I do that...shit

"Wow Anne, What did you do all summer? EAT??"  My coach announces...in front of everyone.  In an instant I am transported back in time...shame, dread and guilt come rushing through me like a charging freight train.  Every inch of me is in discomfort.  Everyone is looking at me, whispering how fat I am, I just know it.  Where can I run, how can I hide...please, just let me disappear....

I step off the scale, hold back the tears and exit the room.  How could I have done this to myself...How could I have let this happen...again...I wont eat, I will show her.  I can be thin, just watch me.  How fast can I lose 10 pounds?

Salads, Diet Cokes and Double Sessions in August.  A recipe for disaster.  I played hard, fought harder, felt miserable.  Soccer wasn't even fun anymore.  This had to stop

Stress, Anxiety, and obsession with food and exercise would continue to slam into me over and over again...30 years later, I have finally decided to plant my feet on the ground and say NO MORE!

My feet firmly planted, and I am beginning to finally grow roots...branches are beginning to reach out to others in need.  I see women of all ages...from tweens to seniors struggle with food, with exercise and with body image.  Why?  Who is it that we have to impress with what is in our grocery cart?  or how our butt looks in jeans? or  How far we can run?  How much we weigh?  I don't want to care anymore.

When we die, do we want our obituary to read?
     * She never ate anything bad for her
     * She was a perfect size 2
     * She was the fittest person I knew

And if that is the case, what is it that we want others to take away from our presence here?

Don't we all have more to offer than what is on the outside?  What about things like honesty, integrity, determination, dedication, drive, teamwork, love, compassion, laughter...

I am growing my tree in a different direction.  I don't care what it looks like, as long as it has lots of touch, durable branches, that spread out in different directions.  It is healthy and strong.  My tree appreciates the ground that supports it, the air that surrounds it, the rain and the sun that take turns nourishing it...It has learned the importance of a good foundation and has accepted that it may not look like any other tree in the forest.  Actually, I think my tree rather likes that fact.

Maxine and Me!

I have a brand new friend, her name is Maxine!  (Maxi-Me)!  She has moved into the neighborhood in my head.   She is awesome.  She shares the best part of herself with me every day.

My Mini-Me (my negative, self sabotaging voice) who has taken up residence for so long in my head, telling me I am not worthy, that I can't do anything right, I am not smart or fit enough, I cant do that...HAS BEEN REPLACED!.

This new friend and internal voice, Maxine, lets me know that I am OK!  That I am human! That I am right where I am supposed to be, doing exactly what I am supposed to be doing right now...

I am gaining strength every day.  This is actually a very funny thing during this time...I can look in the mirror and visibly see that I have actually lost quite a bit of muscle and physical strength...yet I feel stronger than ever in other ways.

Maxine allows me to be comfortable being seen...What others say about me, or about others no longer has the impact of old.  I have released it to them...it is theirs...to have and to hold.  I need not absorb myself in becoming who "I am supposed to be",  or obsess over who they think "I should be", or how they think "I should act."

I am now more comfortable stepping outside the box and embracing my fears.  I have an Ali now in Maxine.  She is always right there providing me the support, she has a kind and compassionate voice.  I know she will support the words I say, the attitude I walk around with and the actions that I take.

My Mini Me is amazingly resilient though.  I am not sure how she gets the transportation, or how she affords it, but she is constantly fighting to move back into my head, into the neighborhood in my head.  So that she has closer access to me than Maxine.

My job now is to continue to give strength and attention to my new ali Maxine so she will continue to gain strength and confidence.  And...try my best to keep Mini Me far, far away.  Continue to Ignore her voice and harassment.

OHHHH that gives me a great idea!  I will calling the police to put a restraining order on my Mini Me, keep her out of my neighborhood once and for all.  Maybe that will help!

Please feel free to send your Mini Me on vacation too...or assign them a restraining order.  Keep her out of your head.

When she comes back in...acknowledge her,  and then send her on away.  Our Mini-Me's are not helpful to us...They are not our friends.  Find other friends...ones that support and care about you.  None of us needs a friend that only picks a fight.  We want friends who love us...no matter what!

A Cup of Tea with Mom

Over the last 4 years, I have been blessed with bonus quality time with both of my parents. I have found it truly amazing that it only takes a cup of tea and some alone time and all of a sudden I am transported back in time with them...Feeling and learning more about who they really are.

Traditionally, a Father will walk his daughter down the isle at her wedding.  I decided to ask both my mom and dad to walk me down the isle a couple years ago.  My mom so innocently asks me "Can you do that?  Is that allowed?"  I happily fill her in...yes, mom, I can do whatever I want.  She was thrilled...

Then, the fall.  A call from my dad.  "Your mother fell.  She broke her hip and her shoulder, they are transporting her up to Dartmouth"  We were in the car within minutes.  Surgery they told us...worry, fear...sadness.  Yet, for my mom, I began to realize her amazing strength and will.  She was determined to walk me down the isle at the wedding.(even though I told her we could decorate a wheel chair, and she would look awesome!) .  Day after day, workout after workout, at 86 my mom showed tremendous dedication and vision.  Yes, a few months later she walked me down the isle at my wedding.  Tears of joy in all our eyes.

My moms story, and strength continues to amaze me.  I have learned more about where this determination and strength has come from, through small snipets of time carved out by circumstance...or is it fate...and a cup of tea.

As she sits in front of me, she shares the story of walking into her bedroom after elementary school time and time again, to see her mother in her bedroom, staring at a baby picture on the wall and crying.  The picture was of her brother Russell, born before my mom.   He died at 9 months...As a young girl...what else would you think other than this: She didn't want me, she wanted him.  Why did they even have me?  hurt, broken, sad....disconnected from her mom...and dad...

Flash forward in time, 19 years old, my mom is a freshman at college.  On her own for the first time.  Worried about leaving her mom, but was reassured by her that she should go.  Her brother calls her: "You have to come home, mom is dead...committed suicide".  My moms first thoughts?  I should have never left home to come here"  She takes another sip of her tea...I went home to take care of my father she tells me...and what happens next?  He takes his own life too...I was lost, My older brother off at war, I was alone.

My thoughts go to all the things that we do today when life falls apart on us...drink, drugs, gamble, eat, shop, sex, exercise...Not my mom...

A good friend and a plane ticket, 1/2 way around the world they go to Hawaii.  Their plans are to work at different places around the world.  In Hawaii they work at the YWCA...too bad her friend falls in love and their journey is cut short.  Now what?  I think...wow, this is a sign to travel down a bad path again...NO...not for mom...Off to Tufts she goes...and meets my dad. :)  Insert happy face here!

It is now that her past begins to haunt her.  In a time where psycho therapy is taboo, she realizes her need....there has to be more to life she thinks.  She sees people being happy and decides to find her way there.  She seeks help to fight her inner demons and works her way slowly back to herself.

As she shares this story, I am amazed at her resilience and strength.  The knowledge, insight, and persistence to know that there had to be more to life, and the guts to ask for help when she needed it...shows you how strong she really is...all 4'10" of her.  Petite Package...astounding strength.

This one is for you mom...I love you, and am so grateful you chose to take me home to be your daughter.

Running to or away?

I looked at the clock...3:11am, great, a whole 8 minutes after I looked the last time.  I climbed out of bed and pulled on my sweat pants, running bra, three layers on top.  I take the walk up the cold wooden stairs, lace up my sneakers and head out the door.  At this point it is automatic.   I am glad it is early, my schedule says 7 miles, I will be able to run longer though....maybe 9 before I have to get to work to teach the boot camp class at 6am.

Running has become my best friend.  I devour books, magazines, training logs.  I am engulfed with the discipline.  I am dedicated, driven, obsessed and addicted.  The feeling is all too familiar.  How did I get here?  Flashbacks of my anorexia years haunt me.  Am I running away from myself? Or am I running to find myself... I knew I needed help.

I was standing in the kitchen with my oldest daughter.  After a semester of tears, depression and anxiety, we had taken her out of high school. Remove her from the atmosphere that was slowly destroying her and taking her spirit.   There it was, the voice, the tone, the terror.  I had heard it many times.  Making me feel sick to my stomach and making me want to disappear.  Only this time it was not directed at me.  It was directed at her.

That was the moment. Fish or cut bait...I filed for divorce the following day.

Scared, frightened, disappointed, ashamed, guilty...out the door I would go, running again...using it to escape.  Masking my emotions, my anger, my hurt.  Day after day...mile after mile...

I was drinking to help me sleep.  Weight was falling off me.  This is awesome I am thinking to myself.   Isn't that what we all want? To be skinnier?  Co-workers and friends expressed thier concern.  I just thought they were jealous because I was thin now...so proud of myself.

3 miles turned into 6-8-10.  My body always in pain.  A glass of wine, or 2 or 3.   There.  Now I feel better.  I close my eyes...sleep,  ahhh...finally.

Day after day, week after week, month after month.  More and more exersice.  I was lost.  I was depressed.  My daughters needed thier mother back.

Asking for help takes courage and strength.  It is not a sign of weakness.  With the love and support of friends, I began to find my way back to myself.  I asked for help.

When you find yourself in a hole,  that either you can't get out of, or maybe dont want to get out of, find the strength to ask for help.  This life is to be lived with joy, purpose, passion and love.  We all have our own unique talents and experiences to bring to each other.  Let your friends and family be blessed with all of you.  Pull yourself out of the hole.  There is always someone who will be willing throw you a rope, but they can't pull you out unless you are ready.

The strength is within all of us...ask and it will be given to you, seek and you shall find...

Releasing Regrets

Knee replacement was Monday.  As I sit here with my leg in a movement machine designed to help increase my range of motion, I start to regret my decision to start running...then my brain goes into hyperdrive and I begin to regret other decisions I have made in my life.   STOP

Regret is not helpful for me...or any of us.

It keeps us trapped in the past, keeps us thinking about how things could be different "IF ONLY"

I challenge myself, and you as well to embrace our IF ONLY'S.... Our regrets are an important part of us.  Our lessons learned, knowledge gained, and experiences had , and even treasured.

Let's take a look inside my brain...PROCEED WITH CAUTION!

What if I hadn't started running? I actually always hated running, I only did it cause I had to for sports. Yet in late 2009 with my marriage on the rocks, I started to head out for runs to clear my head.  I knew it was not good for my knee, I could feel every step, yet that was secondary compared to the release and relief it gave the rest of me...mind, body, spirit and soul.  For maybe the first time, I was actually enjoying spending time with myself.

I was a "closet runner" for about a year...no one knew I ran, I was out the door at 4 am most days of the week.

I "came out" as a runner after I entered my first race, a half marathon (not a5 or 10K like most people would start with!). I got in touch with an old friend and co-worker who was a distance runner to ask for advice...and to see if she would want to pace me.  It would be a great opportunity to catch up.  Cyndi agreed with enthusiasm.  The race was more enjoyable than I could have imagined...the energy, adrenaline, excitement and the friendship.

After that race, and over the next year and a half, I have made some of the best friends of my life. I have heard engaging stories, learned, listened and laughed.  It is amazing where conversations can go during a 16 mile run.

As I look at the long painful road of recovery ahead of me, I am willing to release any regrets I have for what I have done in my life, because it is through the tough and trying times that we become the people we were born to be.

If you find yourself in a place of regret...an "If only" moment.  STOP! take a look from at it from a different angle and see what you gained, the learned experiences, from that regret and release it, knowing that you are stronger  and better because of it.

A Valentines gift to yourself of time and a wish for you…

I see the apple on the table, I hear my stomach growl, I start to calculate as the numbers tick away in my head...60+80=140+50=190+10+120= ...
